Non-Licensure Certificates

Accredited, nonprofit, and built on a century of experience, Concordia University-Portland empowers educators through badges, certificates, and MEd programs with market-driven courses, an engaging faculty of practitioners, and a flexible, fully online format that fits busy lifestyles. Candidates may log in any time of day, complete assignments with realistic deadlines, and grow as a high-impact educator. A candidate may enroll in one certificate program or badge at a time. Upon completion of one, the candidate may apply for enrollment in another. An Admissions Application is required for certificates or badges. An Intent to Graduate Form is required for each certificate program. Refer to the Education Certificate Overview Information for a full description of Admission Requirements and other details.These certificates and badges are non-licensure/non-endorsement programs. In some cases coursework may apply toward the renewal of a teacher’s license.

These badges and certificates do not lead to licensure and all Badges and Certificates with less than 15 required credits are not eligible for Federal Financial Aid. Contact Concordia University's Office of Financial Aid and  Student Accounts teams for additional support on funding opportunities for non-eligible programs.

Students who have enrolled in an aid-eligible graduate degree program are not eligible to transfer credit(s) to a non-aid-eligible Badge or Certificate. However, both Badges and Certificates are buildable programs and a student may enroll in or complete a Badge or Certificate and transfer eligible credits, per program transfer policies, to an aid-eligible graduate degree.

Admission Guidelines

Admissions Guidelines for the COE Non-Licensure 12-credit Certificates:

  • Applicants must have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Official transcripts must be submitted from a regionally accredited college/university with posted bachelor’s or master’s degree. A signed Transcript Release Form may be submitted allowing Concordia University-Portland to request official transcripts on the candidates behalf.
  • Applicants must have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.8 or higher.
  • If a candidate has completed one or more of the Badges and would like to move to the relevant Certificates, the cumulative GPA must be 3.0 in the completed Badge courses.

Early Childhood Education: Curriculum & Leadership Certificate

The Early Childhood Education: Curriculum & Leadership certificate is designed for those who have a strong passion for teaching young children, birth through age 8, and who believe that children learn best through active, hands-on learning. Candidates will explore current trends and research in ECE curriculum.

Goals and Objectives

  • Apply their understanding of child development and learning within the context of families, cultures, languages, and communities in their work with young children.
  • Develop respectful, culturally and linguistically responsive relationships with families and communities to engage and collaborate in young children’s learning and development.
  • Utilize observations, documentation, and other appropriate assessments in a responsible manner to support positive growth for every child.
  • Implement a wide array of developmentally effective, culturally and linguistically relevant teaching practices to promote learning and development.
  • Utilize their knowledge of content to develop and implement curriculum that provides meaningful learning experiences to support learning and development.
  • Conduct themselves as ethical professionals and life-long learners who demonstrate reflective practices and serve as informed advocates for children and their families.

STEAM Education Certificate

The Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) Education Certificate program allows teachers to connect transformative PK–12 education practices with the scientific and mathematical principles of critical thinking, problem solving, and inquiry for students. In this certificate program, best practices will be examined for integrating STEAM principles across the curriculum, Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Math and Language Arts, and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Goals and Objectives

  • Expertise in the utilization of new methods of authentic assessment and strategies as tools to evaluate student learning progress in relation to STEAM professional standards 
  • Exploration of strategies for integration of instruction in the disciplines of STEAM, including inquiry-based learning 
  • The ability to modify instructional plans and promote alternative goals and strategies when necessary, particularly in relation to assessment results 
  • Effective instructional skills in planning, implementing, and assessing instruction in STEAM settings that include diverse cultural populations and special needs students 
  • Exploration of leadership skills for STEAM contexts

Trauma & Resilience Leadership in Educational Settings Certificate

The Trauma and Resilience in Educational Settings certificate supports in-service educators in becoming school, school district or community leaders with the understanding and use of trauma-informed and resilience building practices for the students, the school, and themselves. The certificate will provide opportunities to learn more about practices that support educators and students with strategies for self-care and resilience.

Goals and Objectives

  • Demonstrate understanding for the challenges of trauma on the lives of students, families, teachers, and communities
  • Develop understanding of trauma-informed and resilience building strategies for students, schools, and educators
  • Engage in various methods for self-care, including understanding how to use these tools for building resilience in others
